Toonboom Programs on Sale - get 'em now at student discount prices!

Hi folks

hey listen

you already know I like using "Animate" to do my animation in.

In fact I've just designed a course and exercise that will teach someone who wants to learn some animation basics - and some Toonboom skills real fast.

We have been animating some Hanna Barbera characters walking and moving their heads. Here are some cycles Gabe and Alex and I

Spike N Mike Sick N Twisted Festival this Saturday (August 20th)

Hey folks!

Spike N Mike are having their infamous festival of cartoons that make you ashamed to be human this month and into next month.

I will be there this Saturday to enjoy the films and to hang out with fans and sign stuff.

I suspect IDW will be there with copies of the Spumco Comic Book collection so if you don't already have it, pick one up and I'll smear it for you.

 I'm also

We are upgrading our toonboom animation skills.

I have the guys doing some walk cycles, head actions and dialogue using some of these drawings.

I'll share them when we have made some advances.

Early Stimpy Doodles from Memory

When I first used to draw Stimpy, he had an odder design.

He was more retarded and he had more specific eyes.

He had a rubbery layer of eyelid skin with holes cut out for his peepers to peer through.

This is how I sort of remember him, but I think he might have been weirder.

Here's how he would look if drawn in a modern hipster style.

Happy Authority Figures Day

Happy Father's day Dad! You're the reason I am so obsessed with authority figures in cartoons. And here are a couple of your best lines.

Some of my favorite characters in cartoons are the foils, the ones that are driven crazy by the irresponsible stars.

Discipline and rules - tempered with generosity is the way to bring up kids.

Today is the day to obey your 'ol man everybody! (even

Fanboy Admission and Genetics

I was a super nerd growing up (still am).

All I wanted to do was watch cartoons and draw 'em.

I loved cartoons that were based on personalities - iconic characters, even if they weren't fully animated.

I was especially obsessed with the Flintstones and not only drew them but acted out stories about them in the back yard  with my neighbors, Jeff and Phil. I actually got in trouble for

Ralph Kickstarter

In 1986 I was working for Ralph Bakshi developing pitches for TV shows. One of them was called "Ralph Playhoel" and here is a page of doodles of Ralph and a puppet character from the show. In the segment that Tom Minton and I wrote, Ralph  would have sentimental moments talking to the puppet who he loved as if he were his own child. I forget the name of the puppet, maybe Tom remembers

Maintain Guts

By the way I have an idea on how to share some of these animation clips with you guys

to make some user-generated mashups of silly scenes to music lines

any music you like

all the animation is timed to beats and even the dialogue is rhythmic - it sounds as bouncy backwards as forwards

You could make some fun loops I'll bet

maybe I'll start a youtube channel if anyone's

Ernie Models To Print

These have some general tips that can apply to all characters...see the labels for general construction of faces and how to use space and organic forms.

Some of these drawings may look anarchic but they still have to obey some general drawing principles in order to be effective.

One of the hardest concepts my artists have to learn is to make funny asymmetrical drawings - that still

Inking Tips: UNDERSTAND the drawing before you ink it

Here's a swell pencil drawing of Ernie by Jim Smith. Jim is very good at suggesting form even with rough sketches. If the drawings aren't carefully cleaned up or inked, they can easily flatten out and lose their impact. So it's important to analyze a drawing before you start inking. The first thing is to note how the biggest forms are constructed and how they relate to each other in dimension
